Core Courses

COR100 Orientation to CJJS Major (3)
Prerequisite: Declared CJJS majors only. Focuses on department goals and objectives, curriculum, student - faculty relationships, career options, and the development of competencies needed for success in college and professional environments. Includes experiential activities designed to promote team~building and leadership skills.

COR311 The Juvenile Justice System (3)
Examines the nature and extent of delinquency in the United States and the system response to juvenile crime. Particular attention is given to how police, courts, and correctional agencies respond to juvenile offenders, and the effectiveness of these responses.

COR316 Legal and Ethical Issues in Juvenile Justice (3)
Prerequisites: COR 100 and 201 or departmental approval. An overview of legal issues and court decisions related to juvenile justice. An analysis of the various ethical issues surrounding juvenile justice contexts and practices.

COR321 Juvenile Corrections (3)
Prerequisites: COR 100, 201, and 311 or departmental approval. Examines the extent to which juvenile correctional interventions are used. Provides an in-depth analysis of various correctional responses to juvenile offenders including diversion, community-based and residential programs.

COR350 Rehabilitation Strategies for Adult and Juvenile Offenders (3)
Prerequisites: COR 100 and 201 or departmental approval. An in-depth examination of the treatment role of the correctional worker in juvenile and adult settings. Includes a historical and theoretical review with particular emphasis on contemporary approaches to treatment. Both institutional and community-based efforts are discussed.

An introduction to the concepts, history, processes, and issues in corrections and juvenile justice within the social and legal contexts that these systems function.

COR310 Foundations of Correctional and Juvenile Justice Practice (3)
Prerequisite: COR 100 or departmental approval. Provides a basis for informed responses to delinquency and crime. Examines the conceptual foundations of correctional and juvenile practice from a multidisciplinary standpoint and implications for the effectiveness of these practices.

COR340 Correctional and Juvenile Justice Administration (3)
Prerequisites: COR 100 and 201 or departmental approval. Application of management concepts to corrections with emphasis on organizational structure, planning, decision-making, and directing.

COR320 Intervening with Drug-Involved Youth (3)
Examines the link between substance abuse, delinquency, and other problem outcomes. Reviews the categories of drugs and the physical, psychological, and social effects of their use. Examines evidence¬based strategies for intervening with substance-involved youth.

COR320: Addressing the Mental Health Needs of Youth in the Juvenile Justice System (3)
Examines the etiology and effects of mental health problems common to the juvenile offender population. Describes strategies for intervention within juvenile justice contexts.

COR320: Gang Identification and Intervention (3)
Provides an in-depth examination of the gang subculture, the functions that gangs serve within community and institutional contexts, and effective techniques of gang intervention.

COR320: Diversity in Corrections and Juvenile Justice (3)
Examines various forms of diversity (e.g., race, ethnicity, sexual orientation) in corrections and juvenile justice populations, and the variation in causes and patterns of criminal behavior across subgroups. Discusses strategies for enhancing cultural sensitivity among correctional and juvenile justice workers.

COR423: Working Effectively with Girls in the Juvenile Justice System (3)
Analyzes recent trends in the arrests and dispositions of girls in the juvenile justice system. Examines relevant theories of female delinquency and the developmental pathway to girls’ violent and chronic delinquency. Reviews strategies for gender-responsive programming.

COR423: Intervening with Juvenile Sex Offenders
Examines the etiology and effects of sexual deviance among youth. Describes strategies for intervention within juvenile justice contexts.
