Correctional & Juvenile Justice Studies

Welcome

Girl working at computer

Our students take multidisciplinary courses in such areas as prisons and jails, juvenile justice, community corrections (probation, parole, and other programs), correctional and juvenile law, correctional counseling, research, administration, and juvenile corrections.  Ample opportunities are available to assist faculty on research projects as well as for co-op and practicum placements in the field.

Our faculty have expertise as teachers, researchers, and practitioners.  Their top priority is to help students gain the knowledge and skills needed for successful careers.  In addition to corrections and juvenile justice, our alumni have become employed in other areas of criminal justice, such as police and court agencies, and in related human service professions.  The B.S. and M.S. in correctional and juvenile justice studies also provide solid preparation for further study in law or graduate school.

The teaching, scholarly, and public service activities of the department are closely interrelated and emphasize the link between academics and applied or practical matters.  Faculty and students collaborate on various research projects, and in an effort to contribute to the development and evaluation of humane, effective programs, faculty maintain close ties in personnel in a variety of agencies at all levels of government and in the private sector.  The department has access to outstanding classroom, computer, library, and other resources , which include the Center for Criminal Justice Education and Research.

As the only program in the nation that offers a major in corrections and juvenile justice, we attract students from across the state and nation.  Our undergraduate and graduate students come from diverse backgrounds and have a wide range of interests.  Many are presently employed in the field and are upgrading their credentials to advance within their professions.  Others are preparing for initial entry into a career, and still others are preparing for further studies.
